AIA: Stainless Steel & Concrete Sculptor: Eddie Dixon: Bronze Dedicated December 7th 2018. Doris Miller was born and raised in Waco and was the first African-American to be awarded the Navy Cross due to his outstanding bravery during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The “Many Sailors make a Ship” stainless steel ship’s hull honors the navy servicemen and women who lost their lives at Pearl Harbor, and those alongside Doris Miller when the aircraft carrier Liscomb Bay was torpedoed and sunk in 1943 at the Battle of the Gilbert Isles in the Pacific. The bronze image of Doris Miller, 150% of lifesize, “Coming Home” when manning the rail on the return to port.
